Currently, in Japan there is a 10-year difference between one’s lifespan and one’s healthspan, the period where one lives without health concerns. During this 10-year period, there is a high risk of cerebrovascular disease, dementia, senility, and reduction of movement function caused by aging muscle, bone, body joint, as well as a high chance of requiring caregiving. The Quality Of Life (QOL) of both the patient and caregivers is presently seen as a problem. We aim to create a society where we can prevent these illnesses. We would like to ensure that elderly persons are mentally and physically healthy, full of vigor, and can live independent lifestyles. We are looking for creative preventive medicine research using bee products with various effects and supplements in order to extend healthspan.

1.Purpose

We founded the Yamada Bee Farm with “health for everyone” in mind. We are continuing to research “nature, humanity, and health” from the lens of preventative medicine. In 2008, we started the “Yamada Research Grant” to support creative and meaningful research done by researchers with abroad perspective. One goal is to develop preventive medical research by increasing scientific knowledge. Current year, we are looking for research focusing on “extending healthspan.”

2.Types of Research Grants Programs

1) Preventive Medicine Research Grant

As a result of our super-aged society, we expect that the need for nursing case will increase in the future. We desire to create a society where the elderly can lively in physical and mental health, have a great amount of energy, and also be able to live independently. We are funding research that focuses on physical and mental health in order to achieve an “extension of healthspan.” In addition, as a new food nutrition label system is going to begin in Japan, we expect that more general consumers will have a chance to try taking supplements. We would like to sponsor research on using supplements in an efficient, effective, and safe way to eat. Please not that this is limited research on bee products (royal jelly, propolis, honey, bee larvae, bee pollen, etc.), supplements, and cosmetic materials (including suggestions for new materials) on which have not been reported.

)Physical and Mental Beauty Research focused on “Extending Healthspan”

We are looking for research that focuses on “extending healthspan” while exploring physical health (brain health, bowel health, improving QOL, etc.) as well mental health and physical appearance (beauty). For dermatology research, we are most interested in @study on the skin’s barrier function and improvement of rough skin, research into a lift up effect (and a V-shaped face) Astudy on cosmetic products aimed at menopausal women for improving aging skin caused by hormone imbalance.

Looking for: Researchers affiliated with universities, research institutions, or medical facilities. No age limit.
Grant amount: @ At the cellular and animal level, \1,000,000/year
A For clinical trials, \2,000,000/year
Research grant period: 1-2 years

)Research on the Effective Utilization of Supplements

We are looking for research on the timing of supplement intake(chrononutrition), research related to the pharmacokinetics (ADME: Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion) of ingredients, and formulation research (anti-absorption rate improvement technology). We are interested in research that uses supplements with multiple materials safely and effectively.
Looking for: Researchers affiliated with universities, research institutions, or medical facilities. No age limit.

2)Beekeeping Research Grant

We will fund research that contributes to the development of beekeeping, environmental protection research related to the maintenance and recovery of nectar sources, as well as other research relative to bee sciences and beekeeping technology development. This year, we are particularly seeking research related to the parasitic mites that cause serious harm to bees.

4.Criteria for Application Review

  1. Those not meeting the following guidelines will not be considered for research grants
    under any circumstances.
  2. In the food sector, food safety can be confirmed because of the vast experience with
the ingredients. However, in terms of functionality, many beliefs are merely tradition,
and there is a lack of scientific evidence. In order to truly evaluate functionality as
pertaining to human health, human clinical trials are necessary. This is why the
Yamada Research Grant gives priority to preventive medical health views that are
based on clinical trials as well as effective clinical trials that will eventually lead to
human clinical trials. However, we may allow exceptions for highly creative
    experiments.
  3. We prefer research that has a confirmed evaluation method and has used bee products in preliminary clinical trials.
  4. Those who have received this research grant in the past and not complied with the items found in the contract will not be given consideration.
  5. As this research grant is meant to help develop young researchers, we will preferentially select researchers under 45.
