Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. seeks creative research themes from young researchers according to the guidelines.

1.Background and Purpose


Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. have kept researching and developing new products from the point of view of preventive medicine, holding hopes “for each and every individual health” from the birth of our company. “Yamada Bee Farm Grant for Honeybee Research” established in 2008 supports research themes provided by young researchers from a wide range of areas, and aims to promote researches and studies from multiple points of view in the fields of honeybee research and preventive medical research.


2.Eligible Applicants

Researchers aged 45 years old or younger those who are able to make and explain application in Japanese or English.
※Age limit: 45 years at the time of April 17, 2009.


3.Theme of the Application

Research materials must be natural materials including honeybee products such as royal jelly, propolis, honey, bee pollen and larvae of a bee, of which contents have been previously-unreported. Indicate one from the following four types of research categories.

  1. Preventive medical research on natural materials such as honeybee products or on novel health promoting substances
  2. Cosmetic / dermatology research of honeybee products
  3. Basic research on honeybees
  4. Beekeeping technology research


4.Grant Amount

Research will be supported through the grants each in the amount of more than Japanese Yen 500,000. Annual total amount of grants (all themes) is limited to Yen 100 million. The Program board, on advisement from the Review Committee, may on occasion, and its discretion recommend an award in a less amount than requested and it considers more appropriate for the proposed studies. All budgets are to be prepared in Japanese Yen. The exchange rate (between Japanese Yen and US dollar) used for calculating the Yen budget must be mentioned. Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. reserve the right to increase or decrease approved funding in Japanese Yen amounts to compensate for any significant change in the exchange rate.


5.Review Criteria

  1. Applications which do not conform to this guideline are not accepted under any circumstances.
  2. In the Review Committee, higher priority is given to clinical trials as well as studies with special features including investigation of molecular mechanisms.
  3. Higher priority is given to researches in which preliminary results have already existed and in which investigation methods have already established.
  4. Applicants who have been the grant recipients in the past and who do not conform to the guideline  are ineligible.

7.Application Method

Applicants must be completed in strict accordance with the detailed instructions on the official application form which is provided on the website of Institute for Bee Products & Health Science. Make sure that all applicants must apply through this application form. Otherwise, your application is rejected. In addition, please be forwarded that the application and related documents will not be returned to applicants.


8.Provision of Research Materials

Test samples of honeybee products (royal jelly, propolis, honey, bee pollen and honeybee larvae) are able to be provided for research if requested. Please indicate that in an application. Upon the material transfer, investigators should sign a Material Transfer Agreement.


9.Due Dates for Application

From March 16, 2009 to April 17, 2009 (until 17:00 Japan Time). Applications being provided after the application deadline (April 17, 2009) will not be accepted.


10.Determination of Investigators to be funded

Applications will be subject to scientific review by a Review Committee. Funding will require approval by a Program Board in Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. It is anticipated that applications will be received, reviewed and approved for funding by June 17, 2009. Investigators to be funded will receive a notice-e mail by June 17, 2009. Investigators to be funded will be announced on the website of Institute for Bee Products & Health Science. Note that we will not respond to any inquiries concerning the reasons of the determination. We recommend you to see “5. Review Criteria”.


11.Other Notes

(1)  Submission of an Agreement

The researcher to be granted must submit an agreement concerning the granted research. For the agreement details, refer to the website of Institute For Bee Products & Health Science.

(2) Reporting Requirements

The final scientific progress report including a balance report list must be submitted within 30 days after the end of the project period. Investigators must provide Honeybee Information Center, Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. with copies of papers accepted for publication, and must acknowledge the support of the Program in all written material by use of the phrase: “This work was supported by a Yamada Bee Farm Grant”.
Investigators may be invited to lecture their scientific achievements in seminars held by Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc.

(3) Termination of the Grant and Request for Refunding

It is the responsibility of recipient of the grant to fully understand and comply with the requirements. Failure to comply may results in the request for refunding the full amount or a part of the grant.
Failures are : submitting no reports by the deadline to be scheduled; finding a significant difference between the research details and which details presented when applying; reporting the results that have already presented before the granted research duration; not conforming to the entries of an agreement.
