Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. seeks creative research themes from young researchers according to the guidelines.

1.Background and Purpose


Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. have kept researching and developing new products from the point of view of preventive medicine, holding hopes “for each and every individual health” from the birth of our company. “Yamada Bee Farm Grant for Honeybee Research” established in 2008 supports research themes provided by young researchers from a wide range of areas, and aims to promote researches and studies from multiple points of view in the fields of honeybee research and preventive medical research.


2.Theme of the Application

Research materials must be natural materials including honeybee products such as royal jelly, propolis, honey, bee pollen and larvae of a bee, of which contents have been previously-unreported. Indicate one from the following four types of research categories.

  1. Preventive medical research on natural materials such as honeybee products or on novel health promoting substances
  2. Cosmetic / dermatology research of honeybee products
  3. Basic research on honeybees
  4. Beekeeping technology research


3.Grant Amount

Research will be supported through the grants each in the amount of more than Japanese Yen 500,000. Annual total amount of grants (all themes) is limited to Yen 100 million. The Program board, on advisement from the Review Committee, may on occasion, and its discretion recommend an award in a less amount than requested and it considers more appropriate for the proposed studies. All budgets are to be prepared in Japanese Yen. The exchange rate (between Japanese Yen and US dollar) used for calculating the Yen budget must be mentioned. Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. reserve the right to increase or decrease approved funding in Japanese Yen amounts to compensate for any significant change in the exchange rate.


4.Eligible Applicants

Researchers aged 45 years old or younger those who are able to make and explain application in Japanese or English.
※Age limit: 45 years at the time of April 1, 2010.


5.Review Criteria

  1. Applications which do not conform to this guideline are not accepted under any circumstances.
  2. Since Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. is operating its business in the dietary supplement field, higher priority will be given to researches handling clinical trials based on health perspectives perceived from the aspect of preventive medicine or those handling effectiveness trials that would lead to trials on human beings. However, highly unique trials will be appreciated regardless of this concept.
  3. Higher priority is given to researches in which preliminary results with honeybee products have already existed and in which investigation methods have already established.
  4. Applicants who have been the grant recipients in the past and who do not conform to the guideline are ineligible.


6.Research Period

July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011. (One year)


7.Application Method

Applicants must be completed in strict accordance with the detailed instructions on the official application form which is provided on the website of Institute for Bee Products & Health Science. Make sure that all applicants must apply through this application form. Otherwise, your application is rejected. In addition, please be forwarded that the application and related documents will not be returned to applicants.


8.Provision of Research Materials

Test samples of honeybee products (royal jelly, propolis, honey, bee pollen and honeybee larvae) are able to be provided for research if requested. Please indicate that in an application. Upon the material transfer, investigators should sign a Material Transfer Agreement.


9.Due Dates for Application

From March 1, 2010 to April 30, 2010 (until 17:00 Japan Time)

The contents of the registered application can be modified during the period specified above. When modifying the registered application contents, you will need the personal password which has been provided at the time of initial registration of the application contents.


10.Determination of Investigators to be funded

Applications will be subject to scientific review by a Review Committee comprise eminent persons from industry and academia. Funding will require approval by a Program Board in Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. It is anticipated that applications will be received, reviewed and approved for funding by June 15, 2010. Investigators to be funded will receive a notice-e mail by June 15, 2010. Investigators to be funded will be announced on the website of “Yamada Bee Farm Grant for Honeybee Research”. Note that we will not respond to any inquiries concerning the reasons of the determination. We recommend you to see “5. Review Criteria”.


11.Provisioning of the research grant and its usage

The research grant will be provided to the appointed applicant by the end of August 2010. The usages of the research grant will not be limited as long as it is used for the granted research, but it is to be used according to what is described in the research plan document.


12.Matters Regarding the Treatment of Private Information

(1) Scope of usage of the private information

The private information acquired by Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. regarding the Granted Research will be used with its usage limited for the whole set of businesses regarding the selection of the Granted Research such as accepting the application, making the selection, notifying the examination outcomes, and presenting with the grant. We may provide the private information to the cooperating companies who will be engaged in the filling papers as necessary. (2) Extent of disclosure of the private information

Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. shall be entitled to be able to disclose the name of the Applicant and the Institutional Affiliate where the Applicant belongs to, and the information regarding the theme, etc. of the Granted Research to the general public for the Granted Research which has been determined to be appointed.

(3) Disclosure, correction, and canceling the usage of the private information

Should there be any request made by the Applicant to disclose / correct / cancel the usage of the private information acquired by Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. as for the Granted Research, Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. shall address such request in an adequate and prompt manner by first confirming the identity of the requesting person as being the same person with the Applicant.


13.Report of research

(1) Submitting the Final Report

The applicant shall submit a copy of the whole set of documents to be submitted at final report and the final report dissertation format for “Yamada Bee Farm Grant for Honeybee Research” as for the implementation status of the granted report as of June 30 of the next FY of the year when the granted research had been implemented, and the Payment Details to Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. This is to inform applicant that the deadline for the submission of the above documents is by July 20, 2011.

(2) Reporting session

After the completion of the research period, the appointed researcher is to make a presentation on his/her research results either by making an oral presentation or by presenting a poster.

(3) Award:

The appointed applicant who had achieved an outstanding result will be awarded after the completion of the research period. Those who wish to be included into those subjects for evaluation for the award are to submit the required documents such as the letter of recommendation and the entry sheet, etc. when submitting the final report as described above in (1). Examination for the award will be made by the Review Board of Yamada Bee Farm Grant for Honeybee Research, and will take place at the reporting session described above in (2). Please note that the awarded researcher will have his/her name and his/her research results disclosed to the public.


14.Other Notes

(1) Submission of an Agreement

The researcher to be granted must submit an agreement concerning the granted research. For the agreement details, refer to the website of Institute For Bee Products & Health Science.

(2) Termination of the Grant and Request for Refunding

It is the responsibility of recipient of the grant to fully understand and comply with the requirements. Failure to comply may results in the request for refunding the full amount or a part of the grant. Failures are : submitting no reports by the deadline to be scheduled; finding a significant difference between the research details and which details presented when applying; reporting the results that have already presented before the granted research duration; not conforming to the entries of an agreement.

(3) Presentation of the outcome of Research

When the applicant makes a presentation of the outcome of the research at an academic conference, he/she shall make sure to describe within the presentation that is has been granted by “Yamada Bee Farm Grant for Honeybee Research”. When publishing the dissertation or other publications, he/she shall make sure to describe that “the research had been implemented by having a grant provided by Yamada Bee Farm Grant for Honeybee Research” in the acknowledgement.
