Guidelines

Application for
Yamada Research Grant 2011

1.Background and Purpose

Yamada Institute for Bee Product and Health Science conducts research in Bee Products as well as in Natural Products for protecting individual health from the stand point of preventive medicine. “Yamada Research Grant” was established in 2008 to promote researches on Natural Products and/or preventive medicine. We welcome applications from a wide range of specialty.

2.Theme of the Application

Research topics must be related to natural materials including honeybee products such as royal jelly, propolis, honey, bee pollen, larvae of a bee, etc. Following lists show subjects of application, and please select a theme from these lists. Any original and new research subjects are welcome as long as they are related to health and preventing medicine.

1) Grant for young researchers

  1. Preventive medical research on natural materials such as honeybee products or on novel health promoting substances. The following fields will be given priority.
    A. Anti-metabolic syndrome (Prevention of diabetes, hypertension, adiposity, etc.)
    B. Brain science (Prevention of psychiatric disorders, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, etc.
    Intelligence gain, etc.)
    C. Anti-aging (Health maintenance of eyes and/or ears, dermatology, etc.)
    D. Anti-locomotive syndrome (Health maintenance of bones, muscles, nerves, etc.)
  2. Basic research on honeybees
  3. Beekeeping technology research

 

2) Grant for specific areas

  1. Prevention of diabetes (focusing on insulin resistance).
  2. Prevention of dementia.

3.Grant Amount

Research will be supported through the grant if the application is approved by the Review Committee. The Program Board has a right to increase or decrease the requested amount of the approved grants.

  1. Grant for young researchers
    Between 1,000,000 and 3,000,000 Japanese Yen (approximately $10,000 -$30,000) per theme.
  2. Grant for specific areas
    Up to 10,000,000 Japanese Yen (approximately $100,000) per theme.

4.Age Limit

  1. Grant for young researchers
    Under 45 years old on April 1, 2011.
  2. Grant for specific areas
    No age restriction.

5.Review Criteria

  1. Applications which do not fit to this guideline are not accepted under any circumstances.
  2. A higher priority will be given to the research proposal handling preclinical trials or clinical trials.
  3. A higher priority is given to the research proposal in which preliminary results have already existed and/or the research techniques have been already developed.
  4. Applicants, who have been the recipients of the Yamada Research Grant before but did not follow the rule of the guideline, cannot apply.

6.Research Period

  1. Grant for young researchers
    October 1, 2011 – September 30, 2012 (One year).
  2. Grant for specific areas
    October 1, 2011 – September 30, 2012 (One year) in principle.
    The period can be extended up to two years after an intermediate evaluation.

7.Application Method

Applicants must complete the application form in accordance with the detailed instructions. The instruction and the application form can be down loaded from the website of the Institute for Bee Products & Health Science.

All applicants must use this application form. Otherwise, your application is rejected. The application and attached documents will not be returned to the applicant.

8.Provision of Research Materials

If the applicants request royal jelly, propolis, honey, bee pollen and/or honeybee larvae as test samples, these items are provided for free. Please indicate the desired amount in the application form.

9.Due Dates for Application

From May 1, 2011 to June 30, 2011 (until 17:00 Japan Time)
The contents of the application form can be modified during the period specified above. When modifying the registered application contents, you will need the personal password which was provided at the time of initial submission of the application.

10.Determination of Investigators to be funded

Applications will be examined by a Review Committee, which is comprised of expert members from industry and academia. Funding will require approval by the Program Board of Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. It is anticipated that the applications will be reviewed and approved for funding by the end of August, 2011.The applicants will receive a notice by e-mail by the end of August, 2011. The names of successful applicants will be announced on the website of “Yamada Research Grant”. Please note that we will not respond to any inquiries concerning the reasons of the determination.

11.Provision of the research grant and its usage

The research grant will be provided to the funded applicants by the end of November 2011. The usages of the research grant will be under the discretion of the applicants. It is to be used in accordance with proposal written in the application. When it is deviated from the original application, the applicant should write a letter to the Program Committee to justify the reasons.

12.Matters Regarding the Treatment of Private Information

(1) Scope of usage of the private information

Regarding the grant research, the private information acquired by Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. and Yamada Institute for Bee Product and Health Science will be limited to accepting the application, making the selection, notifying the outcomes, and presenting the grant. As for inquiries regarding private information protection, please contact the Program Board.

(2) Extent of disclosure of the private information

Yamada Institute for Bee Product and Health Science shall be entitled to be able to disclose the name of the applicant and the institutional affiliation where the applicant belongs to, and the information regarding the results obtained by the research grant to the general public.

(3) Disclosure, correction, and canceling the usage of the private information

Should there be any request made by the Applicant to disclose / correct / cancel the usage of the private information acquired by Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc. concerning the Granted Research, Yamada Institute for Bee Product and Health Science shall address such request in an adequate and prompt manner by first confirming the identity of the requesting person as being the same person with the Applicant.

13. Report of research

(1) Submitting the Final Report

The applicant should submit a copy of the final report and in the final report format to the “Yamada Institute for Bee Product and Health Science” on or before September 30, 2012. The submission deadline is October 20, 2012.

(2) Reporting session

After the completion of the research period, the funded researcher should make a presentation on his/her research results either by making an oral presentation or by poster presentation at the workshop sponsored by Yamada Apiculture Center, Inc.

14. Other Notes

(1) Submission of an Agreement

The researcher to be granted must submit an agreement concerning the granted research. For the agreement details, refer to the website of Institute For Bee Products & Health Science.

(2) Termination of the Grant and Request for Refunding

It is the responsibility of recipient of the grant to fully understand and comply with the requirements. Failure to comply may results in the request for refunding the full amount or a part of the grant. Failures are : submitting no reports by the deadline to be scheduled; finding a significant difference between the research details and what was presented when applying; reporting the results that have already presented before the granted research duration; and/or not following the entries of an agreement.

(3) Presentation of the outcome of Research

When the applicant makes a presentation of the outcome of the research at an academic conference, he/she shall make sure to describe within the presentation that the research was supported by “Yamada Research Grant”. When publishing the dissertation or other publications, he/she shall make sure to describe that “This research was supported (in part) by Yamada Research Grant” in the acknowledgement.
